Sorrow, grief, depression, and loneliness can sometimes overwhelm us. But Jesus promises that you are never alone. He is always with us. In our darkest hours, the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, is available to comfort us, teach us, and remind us of all that Jesus has done for us. Seek Him in times of distress.
“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love….Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you” (Jn.15:10, 14). “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments” (1 Jn.2:3).
Do you have moments of deep despair? Are you willing to love and obey Jesus in those dark moments, trusting that He will send you the Holy Spirit, the Counselor, to comfort you that you are never alone?
Think back to a time when your world seemed to be crashing in. Can you remember God’s presence with you in that circumstance? How did everything work out? Often the resolution is not what we imagined or desired, but the presence of the Holy Spirit encouraged us.
Is there a friend or family member who is depressed and/or grieving? Can the Holy Spirit use you to comfort him or her?
Sometimes we allow depression and despair to “make their home” with us. Memorize John 14:23. Invite the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit to come to you and make their home with you.
Pray daily this week for someone you know who is struggling with depression.
Step out in faith this week, remembering that you have the power and presence of the Holy Spirit in your life. Reach out to someone who needs the loving comfort of the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, and allow the Spirit to speak through you as you minister to that person.
