We live in a contentious world and we often forget that the words we speak can pierce the soul, when God desires that our words encourage the hearer.
But it’s not just the words we speak that matter, it is how we handle God’s Word. As Christians and believers in Jesus Christ, we are ambassadors for Him. Our words matter – just as His Word matters.
Have you ever been caught up in a quarrel over words? Did that quarrel bring you into a better relationship with God and others?
Are you a worker for God who “correctly handles the word of truth?” Pray for God’s guidance as you speak, and as you represent His Word in the world.
Do you find yourself drawn into gossip, inane discussions, and “godless chatter?” Does any good come from that?
Do you have a friend who loves to argue and debate with you? Faithfully present the Word of God to that person, not allowing yourself to be drawn into a quarrel.
Act on it
Sometimes it’s easy to be caught up in rumors and speculation. In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Paul exhorts us to “encourage one another and build each other up.” Don’t speak words that are hurtful to the body of Christ. Encourage others in their walk of faith.
Memorize 2 Timothy 2:15 and take it to heart. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
Remember in the midst of strife and division that God’s foundation stands firm. People will not always agree, quarrels will arise, but God always wins – “The Lord knows those who are his.”
