The Honourable Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly Rt Hon Ovwigho Igbuya has said that the suspended chairman of Uvwie Council, Hon Henry Baro is not a common criminal who would evade arrest, insisting that, the police cannot arrest him within the premises of the state assembly.
The speaker stated this in Asaba, the Delta State capital when the police on the order of the police commissioner barricade the assembly complex to arrest him.
the suspended chairman of Uvwie Council said that they can reach him in his house for arrest, just as he ordered seizure of the complainant’s vehicle. Hon. Baro had gone to the Delta State House of Assembly on the invitation of the house when policemen in their large numbers ambushed him to carry out his arrest based on alleged petition against him.
The police who alleged that there was a petition against the embattled Uvwie Council chairman said they have authority of the state commissioner of police, Mr. Usman Akali to arrest him.
Effort by Baro to convince the policemen that he was on the House invitation and tom keep an appointment with his doctor could not sway the resolve of the policemen who had barricaded the entrance to the assembly complex with their vehicles, as the leader of the team, a police superintendent insisted on arresting the embattled Uvwie Council chairman.
The complainant, who was alleged to have been sponsored by the embattled chairman political opponents, also joined the police to block the entrance of the assembly complex with his car in an attempt to ensure that Baro did not escape the arrest.
The scene created by the police which lasted more than an hour drew the attention of the speaker and his deputy who had gone home, but had to return to the assembly complex, and on sighting the speaker and his deputy the police took to their heels, leaving the complainant who was still fighting with Baro’s supporters when the speaker arrived.
The speaker subsequently ordered that the car of the Uvwie Council complainant be seized.
