Delta State Govt. Promise Patronizing Local News and Media
The Delta State Government has urged media practitioners in the state to partner with the government for even development of the state, just as it promised to make good use of community newspapers in the dissemination of policies to Deltans.
When the Urhobo Media Practitioners Forum paid a courtesy visit to Government house, Asaba, Secretary to the state Government (SSG), Chief (Hon.) Ovie Agas, acknowledged the enviable roles of the media in the society, urging media practitioners to always cross check their facts as they affect issues of governance in the state, to avoid conflicting reporting.
He assured that government officials are on the ground at all times to answer any question from them.
Delta State Government welcomes constructive criticism on its programmes, policies and correction since no one claims monopoly of wisdom, he added.
The SSG said the government will be fair and just to all Deltans, irrespective of their ethnic background. His words: “I can tell you that Governor Okowa has high regard for community newspapers as a result of their ability to touch the grassroots. Of what use is it to spend on CNN when a lot of our people cannot access it?”
He also disclosed that the state government has plans for local media in the state because in no distance time “we are going to make good use of the community press in the state”.
Stressing that state government has embarked on the renovation of agriculture to create jobs for youths in Delta State, he called on the group to see the Okowa led administration as their government.
He charged them to feel free to access the government whenever they want, since the door of the government is open to them anytime any day.
The forum is made up of media practitioners of Urobo extraction, he explained. Adding that it is a non-political group with the aim to protect, project and promot any Urhobo son or daughter in public and private position and does believe in or entertain character assassination of any Urhobo son or daughter anywhere in the world.
